Attn Tyler Dix Wisconsin DNR – For over 3 years now, we have researched and witnessed, in Kewaunee, St. Croix, Juneau, Portage, and Crawford County, WI as well as numerous other counties across the Midwest, the negative impacts of CAFOs of this magnitude. We have learned that a concentration of nitrates cannot be boiled out of our drinking water. We know that unsustainable industrial farms are largely the cause of elevated nitrate levels in ground and surface water. We know that if our groundwater is at risk, so is our health and wellbeing. More than 30 epidemiologic studies have shown that infant methemoglobinemia, colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer, thyroid disease, adverse reproductive outcomes and other adverse health effects are caused by elevated nitrates in drinking water. The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that the WDNR does indeed have the authority to protect our water here in the state of Wisconsin. We ask that you reject the Cumberland LLC application based on the unsustainable size and the poor choice of siting in an area with shallow groundwater, a single aquifer, numerous recreational seepage lakes, and within the Watershed to the Nationally protected St. Croix Riverway.

Attn Tyler Dix Wisconsin DNR – The natural resources of the state of Wisconsin are of paramount public concern in the interest of the health, safety and general welfare of the people. The DNR has been given the authority and the responsibility to protect our water. We have CC’d our Legislators as they should support the DNR and provide stricter laws for the protection of the air, water and other natural resources of the state from pollution, impairment and destruction from unsustainable industrial farming. They should be focused on preserving our sustainable family farms and not allowing the industrial farms to decimate Wisconsin. Please reject the Cumberland LLC permit application. Cumberland has chosen a site that cannot support that size of an operation without polluting ground and surface water in an area of a single aquifer, shallow groundwater, numerous recreational drainage lakes, rivers and the watershed to a nationally protected waterway. If the DNR cannot be 100 percent certain Cumberland will not pollute our water, they should not be allowed to site here, period.

Attn Tyler Dix Wisconsin DNR – On January 12, 2023, the WDNR acknowledged receipt of a new final application from Cumberland LLC. We need you to take action immediately! We are not anti agriculture, but we are in a fragile area with shallow ground water and a single aquifer. Our many recreational lakes are drainage lakes and are already on the 303(d) list of impaired waters. The proposed siting and spreading fields are in the watershed to the nationally protected Scenic St. Croix River. There are so many reasons why Cumberland should not be allowed to site in this area. The residents here rely on groundwater to drink and strongly oppose the Cumberland CAFO. The loss of recreational revenue will be devastating to the community. The loss of property value tax revenue will also be huge. There will no doubt be negative impact to our family farmers. We are trying desperately to save our local sustainable farmers and protect the health and wellbeing of our community. We ask the DNR to use their authority to protect our water and reject the Cumberland LLC application, as life all starts and ends with the water.
